Korn Makes a Comeback

Published on January 24th, 2012

There’s a lot happening with the band Korn. They’ve put out their most ambitious album yet The Path of Totality. It is a blend of their signature style rock with today’s dub-step music. Producers from Skrillex, 12th Planet, Noisia, Feed Me, Datsik, Flinch, Downlink, Kill The Noise, and Excision were all on board for this album.

Looking back, Korn may have been the originators of dub-step but with real instruments. It’s obvious with their crunchy guitar riffs and gnarly effects that originated the whole hip hip grooved metal movement,  known as nu-metal. It all sounds similar to the electronic elements of dub-step today.

The Path of Totality may seem like a brilliant idea from the start, but it is a gamble for the band of 19 years. Korn’s tenth album may have alienated some fans even if both genres seem to mesh well. In it’s first week of release, The Path of Totality sold over 55,000 copies which is solid in today’s numbers (over 130,000 copies sold as of January 2012), but ultimately it will be in 2012 that will determine the outcome of Korn’s success or failure of the entire The Path of Totality campaign.

Recently, former guitarist Brian “Head” Welch spoke with Legendary Rock Interviews and stated about a possible reunion with his ex-band mates, “I have no plans to do such a reunion, but if it were for the right reasons and we all felt the same way about it I would definitely keep an open mind about it.”

Head quit Korn in 2005 for “moral objections” and found Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. In recent interviews, bassist Reginald “Fieldy” Arvizu mentioned how he has found religion in Christianity as well, but continues to rock with Korn.

For those curious about Korn performing live dub-step, you can catch them at Congress Theater Friday, February 24th. Perhaps there will be an after party with singer Jonathan Davis DJing somewhere in the city. Tickets to the Congress Theater show are now on sale here.
